They say that the two most important pieces of equipment that a soldier will ever have are his rifle and his boots. And if he drops his rifle and runs, he's still got his boots.
Yesterday I went out and bought myself a new pair of safety shoes, and I didn't spare any expense. With the extra cushioning insoles, it came to almost $200. You might think that's a bit high, but not when you think how much of your life you spend in your work shoes. I work on a concrete floor all day, and as the day wears on I can really feel it. Maybe I'm getting old.
When I was younger I would just buy the cheap Wal-mart $40 boots. I just didn't care. I guess I was a lot tougher then. Maybe if I'd had decent shoes my back wouldn't be so screwed up now. Oh well, I can't change the past, but from now on I'm going to be wearing only the best of footwear when I work. 8 hours is a long time to be in hard, uncomfortable shoes. All of your weight is supported by your feet, so it's important to take care of them. Funny that I should only realize this in my forties.
There's some things that you just don't skimp on, like toilet paper, seafood, and of course, a good pair of work shoes.
